Twitter Idea: The Mute Button

So you’re pretty happy with your twitter feed and the people you follow are posting useful info. But sometimes you get those users that decide now is a great time to clog up your wall.

Examples:

  • Someone decides to tell you exactly what they are drinking at the pub, starting with 5 updates before they go out
  • Someone gives you their feedback after every contestant in Idols
  • As someone adds an ingredient to their meal
  • Jamie O’Brien has had one too many Red Bull’s and starts tuning the world
  • Two people you follow start a convo in your feed, perfect for their own chatroom
  • CricInfo decides to give you over by over reports on a match between Zimbabwe and Kenya

Ok blah blah, you get the point… The idea is simple:

You visit the annoying users profile (you don’t want to permanently unfollow) and hit the “mute button”. This pauses/removes the users updates from your feed for 12 hours, the perfect amount of time until their binge is over, food is cooked, cricket match is over. So you’re left in peace without having to refollow their profile, updates simply continue 12 hours later with no harm done to anyone.

Simple.

That is absolutely brilliant, can’t stand when britains got talent or the apprentice. I have 2 or 3 people I follow who go mental. And the rest of the week I really enjoy their tweets.

Nice idea. I’ve heard of other people mention it before too. Common problem it seems.

Icon looks like a plug socket :P
